At Alondra Dental Care, our partial dental procedure is tailored to you. Learn more about our services and the benefits of this removal dental mechanism.
A removable partial denture is an oral piece that can be taken in and out of the mouth. This mechanism has replacement teeth attached to gum-colored plastic bases, as shown above. Frameworks and connectors may be metal or more natural-looking, and may include precision attachments, which are generally more esthetic and more expensive than metal clasps. designed specifically to meet the needs of the patient and can replace one or more missing teeth.
Each of these dentures is designed specifically for each individual patient to replace their teeth that are missing in a way that best promotes their oral hygiene. Smaller examples may only replace a single tooth, while others replace most teeth. If all teeth need to be replaced, a complete denture is required.
Partial dentures are created out of a metal and acrylic composition or completely out of acrylic. A patient’s specific needs and anatomy dictate their denture design. At Alondra Dental Care, every effort is made to construct a self-cleansing partial that preserves the remaining teeth and oral tissues.
As part of our partial dental procedure, a dental specialist will design your individual denture so that the chewing forces are evenly distributed over the entire surface area of the remaining teeth and soft tissues. Changes to your remaining teeth may be recommended to help equalize these forces.
Metal partials are generally preferred, as they are structurally superior. They are both thinner and more hygienic than an acrylic partial. Acrylic partials are typically used as a transitional or temporary partial, which may be something suited to your circumstances. Your dentist will consult with you to determine the appropriate partial for your situation.
A removable partial denture may help limit movement of your existing natural teeth. They also allow you to better grind and chew food, improving digestion. So a natural appearance and speech clarity is restored along with the ability to eat more efficiently.
How long do partial dentures take to settle?
Settling time varies post-procedure, but you can expect your new partials to settle within the first eight hours. Since your gums take time to acclimate to the shape of these dentures, the fit will feel loose at first but soon settle into a comfortably snug fit. Then, you’ll be the one who needs to settle as you work to adjust to the new feeling in your mouth.
Can I leave my partial denture in all the time?
Yes. Until your dentist instructs otherwise, you’ll leave your denture piece in at all times except when you are actively cleaning them. You will not only be able to eat and sleep and live your regular life with your partials in, but it will also actually be better to keep them in for those activities.
Can you eat normally with a partial denture?
Yes. However, it typically takes time to get used to eating with something new in your mouth. Your dentist will help you determine how to undergo this transition. Softer foods that don’t require as much biting or chewing are typically the best starting point as you ease back into eating normally.
How often should I wear my partials?
Your dentist will give you specific direction on your individual partials and how often you should wear or not wear them. Initially, once they are comfortable enough for you to keep them in for long periods of time, you will likely be wearing them as much as possible.
