A Simple Procedure to Replace Missing Teeth

At Alondra Dental Care, our partial dental procedure is designed to restore your smile and strengthen your bite. If you’re in need of partial dentures in Los Angeles to fill in the gaps, we’re dedicated to supporting your needs! Learn more about our services and the benefits of this removable dental mechanism.

What Are Partial Dentures?

How is a “partial” denture different from a regular complete denture? Instead of replacing all of a patient’s teeth, a removable partial denture is specially designed to replace only where needed. The device slides over the remaining natural teeth and locks into place.

The denture teeth are attached to gum-colored plastic bases, and a connecting framework holds the device together. A partial denture can replace a single tooth or most of the teeth — each denture is uniquely crafted to fill in the gaps as needed. If you’re ready to smile with confidence, we’re here to help!

What Is the Procedure for Getting Partial Dentures?

Developing partial dentures requires a few steps. At Alondra Dental Care, our goal is to create a comfortable solution that holistically considers your overall oral health.

  1. We start by conducting a comprehensive dental exam. If there are any issues or concerns that could complicate your partial denture procedure, we need to address those first before we send any molds to the lab.
  2. If needed, we will remove tooth fragments and tackle root tips or bony protuberances in order to ensure that you can wear your partials comfortably.
  3. When you are ready to receive the denture, Dr. Abad will take impressions of your mouth so that we can craft partials that fit your smile perfectly.
  4. We have a final “try-on” appointment to make sure that the partials fit and that you’re completely satisfied with the way they look in your mouth.

What Materials Do You Use for Partial Dentures?

Dentists in the Los Angeles area will either use a metal and acrylic composition or a completely acrylic partial denture. Ultimately, we work with your needs and expectations to craft a custom experience that fits your smile. Our goal is to construct a self-cleansing partial that preserves the remaining teeth and oral tissues as well.

As part of our partial dental procedure, Dr. Abad will design your individual denture so that the chewing forces are evenly distributed over the entire surface area of the remaining teeth and soft tissues. Changes to your remaining teeth may be recommended to help equalize these forces.

Metal partials are generally preferred as they are structurally superior. They are both thinner and more hygienic than an acrylic partial. Acrylic partials are typically used as transitional or temporary solutions, which may be something suited to your needs at this point in time. We’ll work closely with you to better understand which partial dentures are available and which are the right fit for your current dental situation.

What Are the Benefits of Using This Type of Denture?

If you’re looking into partial dentures in Los Angeles, it’s important to know the potential pros and cons of your desired restorative dental treatment. A removable partial denture may help limit undesirable shifting of your existing natural teeth, allow you to better chew your food and speak, and help you maintain your jaw structure. Unlike restorative surgical procedures, partials are also more affordable, quicker to address the issue of missing teeth, and can be taken out for your convenience.

In comparison to immediate (temporary) dentures or conventional dentures, partial dentures are designed to be worn for an extended period of time and are a much better solution for those who have remaining teeth that are still quite healthy (as opposed to needing complete dentures after all remaining damaged teeth are pulled).

That being said, partials can have their drawbacks. They do require cleaning, they can be difficult to adjust to wearing for some patients. We’ll work with you to help you better understand the advantages and disadvantages before you commit to a partial denture procedure.

Partial Dentures FAQs

How long do partial dentures take to settle?

Settling time varies post-procedure, but you can expect your new partials to settle within the first eight hours. Since your gums take time to acclimate to the shape of these dentures, the fit will feel loose at first but soon settle into a comfortably snug fit. Then, you’ll be the one who needs to settle as you work to adjust to the new feeling in your mouth.

Can I leave my partial denture in all the time?

Yes. Until your dentist instructs otherwise, you’ll leave your denture piece in at all times except when you are actively cleaning them. You will not only be able to eat and sleep and live your regular life with your partial dentures in, but it will also actually be better to keep them in for those activities.

Can you eat normally with a partial denture?

Yes. However, it typically takes time to get used to eating with something new in your mouth. Your dentist will help you determine how to undergo this transition. Softer foods that don’t require as much biting or chewing are typically the best starting point as you ease back into eating normally after your partial denture procedure.

How often should I wear my partials?

Your dentist will give you specific directions on your individual partials and how often you should wear or not wear them. Initially, once they are comfortable enough for you to keep them in for long periods of time, you will likely be wearing them as much as possible.

Will I experience discomfort?

Partial dentures may require an adjustment period on your end, and discomfort can be a part of that process. Fortunately, there are plenty of strategies you can use to relieve denture pain and discomfort so that you can acclimate to your partials faster.
